I Think I Can(tata)

Greetings! I hope you all are having a wonderful 2017! To be honest, it has been a rough year in my personal life, but things continue to get better and better. In the hard times of recent, I have often thought of the comfort of music. Whether I am listening to new or old music, or performing music with old and new friends, music is such a special experience in life. I have had a few really fun gigs this year with the Doug Warring Big Band. I always have a great time with a big band, all that power and beauty from a larger collective of friends; there is nothing like it. I have also had the chance to play jazz with singer Missy Babcock as well as blues with Mean Red Spyder. All good times, all wonderful memories. One of the coolest gigs I have had of late is performing with the Idaho Falls Opera Theatre for their production of Carmina Burana and the world premier of Persephone, a cantata written and directed by my good friend Roger Evans. I have the honor of being the timpanist and percussion section leader for this production, which is a fun challenge since Carmina is one of the most demanding and aggressive timpani parts in classical/opera literature. Besides that, it is written in a way that can be hard to interpret, so another great lesson in active listening. I am grateful for the opportunity to better myself and rise to the occasion.

First night went off without a hitch, as well as the second night. Not to say all the notes were perfect by everyone, but it was a stellar performance. It was awesome to have such an energy with the orchestra, choir, soloists, and dancers. It was a very well developed production. And Roger’s original work was spectacular and received by the audience very positively. I am glad it worked out well for him. I know the anxiety that can come from performing something you wrote, even more so if you put heart and soul in it.

In conclusion, I am grateful for what I have done already this year. I also look forward to all the ups and downs, as well as the opportunities that will come in music and life. God Bless!

P.S.
